Continuing the
philatelic exploration of this island, I illustrate here a late cover sent in
1956 just before the Post Office on the Ile aux Marins closed. The sender must
have known that the Post Office was soon to close as he sent numerous philatelic
covers to himself in Toronto, Canada. I have numerous covers of this type with
engaging combinations of the 1947 Coat of Arms Postage Due stamps franked exclusively
on Ile aux Marins or with subsequent postage affixed at St. Pierre and subsequent
cancellations of St. Pierre, in combination with the Ile aux Marins cancel. The
steel cancel was introduced in the 1940s and served until the Post Office closed
in 1956. By this time the island had ceased to be the commercial centre that it
had been formerly , however to give you an idea of how busy it was in its heyday
( beaux jours de la prosperite), I have illustrated a postcard sent from St. Pierre
to Vanderhoof B.C. Canada, which shows the activity on the Ile aux Chiens in the
early 1900s. | |||
