    "Ile aux Chiens - 1908"

At the turn of the century, "Ile aux Marins" was a vibrant community of workers
in the fish industry, served by stores and a church. The island just outside the harbour at
St. Pierre is now restored as a park and the visitor arriving by boat passes close by its west side. Trips can also be made by boat to visit the island and its museum and restored buildings, as well as the prominent cemetery.

For stamp collectors one of the great finds is a postmark from this community, be it " Ile aux Chiens " or "Ile aux Marins".The post office ceased operating in 1956 ,the island being no longer permanently inhabited. This front is from commercial correspondence addressed to a shoe exporter in Halifax , Nova Scotia. It is franked with the correct 25 centime rate for a first step letter and has a clear double ring " Ile aux Chiens" postmark dated August 11 1908.
