Postcards and Stamps
| The postcards of St. Pierre and Miquelon are a collecting area
in itself , the cards printed and the publishers have been well documented and
many collectors have a list of their ówantsâ. Recently there has been an
upsurge in the prices for this material, led by the market in France, yet a good
percentage of the postcards used in the period 1900 to 1930 were addressed to
North America. The cards are becoming scarcer in North America too and many sell
in the region of U.S.$30.00 each and up. |

The stamp collector finds an added attraction in that many cards
were sent through a system of post card exchanges. Collectors used to exchange
cards of their prospective countries and they would have the stamps for postage
affixed to the front of the card. Here is an example of just such a card, which
was sent from St. Pierre and Miquelon in 1931. It was sent to Slovenia in the
then kingdom of Yugoslavia , the card was sent from St. Pierre on August 14 1931
and arrived in Gornja-Radgona on October 06 1931.The face of the card which shows
the port of St. Pierre blocked with ice, has been franked with postage totaling
1fr84c, a rather odd amount , made up of stamps issued between 1908 - 1917 and
a 40c stamp issued for the Colonial Exposition in Paris in 1931. The card is one
of a series issued by the publisher A.M.Brehier ( No.70).
