Expensive Red Tape

Admiralty blunders are not, says a Paris correspondent, a priviledge of Great Britain alone. The French Minister of Marine kept at St. Pierre Miquelon, near Newfoundland, a stock of empty barrels which had contained lard, wine and salt meat. The Colonial Governor, not knowing what to do with these « emtpies », which were rotting and falling to pieces, asked that they might be removed. The Commisoner of the Minister of Marine ruled however, that they must be sent to France. As no transport is to be found in the Newfoundland waters, it was necessary to charter a sailing vessel, the Seaflower, which was on its way to Saint Malo. The vessel landed the other day, its precious freight, a sum of L 1000 being paid by the Admiralty to the owners. The barrels were sold by auction and fetched the sum of L 6.

Gerald Carlton. who served as consul at St. Pierre. Miquelon, under appointment from President McKinley, was pointing out how undesirable such positions Are, says the New York Times. « It cost me $200 to get there, » said he. « and when I arrived, being one of them ‘literary fellers,’ I hadn’t any more money than I could conveniently carry around with me. There was no salary attached to the place, it being a fee office. I found that my predecessor had cleaned up everything in sight.
« To add to my troubles the ‘queen of the island.’ a wealthy widow, attempted to marry me and the Pooh Bah, a sort, of missing link, had a habit of being evercompanionnable. I finally asked President Mc Kinley to stop considering me a consul. Then I packed my grip and started for the land of the free and the home of the brave. No more consulships in mind, thank you I’ve had that and been cured. »

Fr. W. passed your email on to me as I had done a fair bit of research about the bells at St. Mary’s. However, there is very little information about them available. If there was one bell that was here when the first church was erected, then there is no information as to what happened to it. The bells that are here now were first installed in 1879. During the Halifax explosion some of the bells were cracked and were sent to England to be re-cast. On the largest of the bells there is an inscription of the re-casting date and that the bells were in honour of those serving in World War I.

I am sorry I cannot offer you any information on the bell that you are searching for. If I can be of any other assistance, then please let me know.

The first USS Monticello was a wooden screw-steamer in the United States Navy during the American Civil War. She was named for the home of Thomas Jefferson. She was briefly named Star in May 1861.

After the war, Monticello decommissioned 24 July 1865 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was sold at public auction at Boston, Massachusetts to W. H. Lincoln 1 November 1865. Redocumented for merchant service 25 July 1866, she served American commerce until foundering off Newfoundland 29 April 1872.

Giovanni Battista Ramusio (1485-1557) est un géographe italien. Né à Venise, il remplit diverses missions politiques en France, en Suisse, à Rome, puis est secrétaire du Conseil des Dix à Venise.

Il reste de lui un recueil de navigations et voyages intitulé Delle Navigationi et Viaggi, en 3 volumes in-folio, Venise (1550), souvent réimprimé et traduit en partie dans sa Description de l’Afrique de J. Temporal, Lyon (1566).
