London, April 11. – The Paris correspondant of the Sunday Times says the view taken in the French capital is that the treaty allows the inhabitants of Newfoundland to play in their own yard, but the French remain in possession all the same, and will be provided with plenty of bait to give a fresh impetus to a declining industry. The article concludes : « The error of Utrecht has been galvanized into fresh life. »
DEARLY BOUGHT FRIENDSHIP
The Sunday Observer, in an article headed « Dearly Bought Friendship, » says : « St.Pierre and Miquelon remain in French hands, a source of menace and irritation to Canadians. By a fair bargain these would have been conveyed to Britain and monetary compensation awarded to the colonial traders and fishermen ruined by French operations on the treaty shore. »
BOON TO FISHERMEN
The Paris Matin says : « The French rights in Newfoundland were losing their value each year, and slipping inevitably from our fingers by a process of natural evolution If Newfoundland had decided to become part of Canada, there would have been no compensation.
Lord Strathcona says the agreement is a very fair compromise for Newfoundland, and has settled a very delicate question.
