FRANCE TO PART WITH ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELON
Chance for Canada or Newfoundland to Obtain Islands – Recent Exodus of Inhabitants.
Canadian Associated Press.

London, Jan, 4. – The London Globe says : « It seems there are rumors in various quarters that France will likely give up St. Pierre and Miquelon »
Recent despatches have indicated there was great depression and absence of profitable labor on the islands, and an exodus of the population which totalled over 6,000. These islands have been the source of a good deal of annoyance to Britain in the past. They are the sole relics of France’s former great empire in North America, with the exception of some islands in the West Indies. St. Pierre and Miquelon are the principal islands of a group off the south-east coast of Newfoundland. Their combined area is about 95 square miles. The inhabitants are mostly cod fishermen, Canada or Newfoundland would doubtless be glad to extend jurisdiction over them.
